Severe Macaw

Severe Macaw (Ara Severa)

 

Also known as the Chestnut Fronted Macaw.  The plumage is metallic green, the crown is blue.  The shoulders are red.  Flight and tail feathers are blue while the under side are dark reddish brown.  The chin is a dark reddish brown.  The beak is black with dark gray feet.  Wing span is approximately 8 to 10 inches (photos below).

 

Length:   About 18” Long

Life Span: 40 to 50 years

Gender:   Undeterminable by appearance

Origin:  South America .  Native to Venezuela through the Guyana’s and South to Northeast Brazil.

 

Trainability

These feathered friends are extremely social and love to mimic speech. They are known for forming strong bonds with their human keepers. They are quite intelligent and should be provided plenty of toys, ropes, swings and LOTS and LOTS of wood to chew on. They eat a large variety of nuts, fruits, vegetables, seed and commercial pellets. They are well known for their playfulness and acrobatics.
